Dress Code
Students are required to adhere to a simple dress code and maintain and neat, professional appearance in the classroom. Civic Dance Center faculty and Executive Artistic Director have the final say in all matters relating to student attire.
To train in proper ballet*, jazz, and modern technique it is imperative the teacher be able to see the line of the movement(s) the dancer is creating. All students’ hair must be pulled up off the neck and pulled back off the face.
*A bun is required in ballet class for all female and male students with hair longer than their shoulders.
Female Dancer Dress Code:
- Solid color leotard (given at the time of placement)*
- Active Start, Movin’ & Groovin’: Light Pink
- Primary & Elementary Ballet (6,7,8 & 7,8,9): Baby Blue
- Ballet 1: Turquoise
- Ballet 2: Dark Pink
- Ballet 3, Beginning Pointe, Pointe 3: Dark Purple
- Ballet 4, Pointe 4: Lavender
- Intermediate Ballet & Elementary Ballet 10+: Red
- Ballet 5, Pointe 5: Grey
- Ballet 6, Pointe 6: Navy Blue
- Tights** (full footed/convertable)
- Technique shoes**
- Pointe shoes** (if applicable)
- Ballet skirt (only in the center for technique and pointe class)
- Jazz Shoes (for Jazz, Modern and Musical Theater class only)
- Dance Socks (for Jazz, Modern class only)
- Fitted athletic leggings or convertible tights (Jazz, Modern, Musical Theater, Tap class only)
- Fitted athletic shirt or tank top (Jazz, Modern, Musical Theater, Tap class only)
- Tap Shoes (for Tap class only)
- Fitted athletic leggings or convertible tights (Jazz, Modern, Tap and Musical Theater class only)
*Make up/extra classes must be attended in the color of your given level leotard or the color of leotard for the level you are taking.
**Please note that our female dancer’s dress code allows students to self-select the color of their tights, technique shoes, and pointe shoes. The color may be chosen to best match the student’s natural skin tone to further elongate the line or be ballet pink. In any event, the color of a student’s technique or pointe shoes must match the color of their tights. Students can wear black tights for Jazz, Tap, Modern, and Musical Theater classes.
Male Dancer Dress Code:
- White or black short-sleeve leotard or fitted t-shirt (must be tucked in)
- Black tights (full footed/convertible) or black fitted biker shorts
- Dance brief or dance belt
- Ankle socks*
- Black or white ballet technique shoes*
- Fitted athletic pants (for Jazz, Modern, Tap, and Musical Theater class only)
- Fitted athletic shirt or tank top (Jazz, Modern, Tap and Musical Theater class only)
- Jazz shoes (for Jazz, Modern, or Musical Theater class only)
- Dance socks (for Jazz or Modern class only)
- Tap shoes (for Tap class only)
*If the student chooses to wear ankle socks, they must match the color of technique shoes. For example: students can choose to wear black tights with white socks and white shoes or black shoes and no socks.
Hip Hop Dress Code:
Students are encouraged to wear clothing that won’t hinder their ability to execute the given steps.
Unkept hair and jeans are never acceptable to wear in any class.
Students can select the dress code option that aligns most closely with their gender identity.
