Civic Dance Center is proud to present a new ballet. We will be adding Hansel & Gretel: The Crone’s Coven to our repertoire in the Fall. Ballet level 1A and above has the opportunity to perform in the new spooky repertoire. This story is a retelling of the classic German fairytale that will be a contemporary ballet focusing on the crones who kidnap the village children, and the lengths to which a mother will go to save her children. The ballet is set in the 1700s in Bohlen, a village in Germany around Hallows Eve. Audiences will be captivated by the daunting score, creepily elegant costumes, and beautiful dancing.

H&G: The Crone’s Coven has approximately 50-55 roles available. If your dancer is interested in being a part of the spooky repertoire carefully read and consider the following requirements:

  1. You must be willing to accept ANY role. Some young girls may required to play a Village Boy. All roles will be performed on flat.
  2. ALL participants that are cast will be required to pay a Production Fee due by July 15, 2024. Do not pay prior to casting. One performer $120, additional performers in the same family $75 for each additional dancer. The production fee helps offset the various expenses needed to produce a show of this magnitude.
  3. Rehearsals:
    • Participants must attend ALL rehearsals.
    • Rehearsals will begin at the end of summer: August 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th 3:00-7:00pm. August 10th 11:00-5:00pm. August 17th 1:00-5:00pm. August 18th 1:00-5:00pm.
    • A more detailed rehearsal schedule will be given with casting.
    • Pending your role you may only be required to attend a portion of the times listed above.
    • Rehearsals will also be held on the Saturdays in September and October leading up to the performances. There will be no conflict for dancers who are cast in both Hansel & Gretel: The Crone’s Coven and The Nutcracker.
    • Keep track of your own rehearsal schedule! You are responsible for watching the bulletin board and online schedule for posted rehearsals and potential schedule changes. Unexcused absences may result in losing your role.
  4. Performances: Our spooky repertoire will be performed at the Historic Fox Theater Bakersfield.
    • There will be two performances. One for Cast A, one for Cast B. Depending on casting, your dancer may have a role in both Cast A and B and would therefore be performing in both shows. Cast A will perform Friday evening 7:30pm. Cast B will perform Saturday matinee 2:00pm.
    • Save the dates for each Friday and Saturday in October. Performance dates are not currently finalized but will be by June 1, 2024.
  5. Dancers must take all their regularly scheduled classes at Civic Dance Center to perform in Hansel and Gretel: The Crone’s Coven. Dropping classes after casting envelopes have been given is not permitted and will result in losing your part.
  6. Do not add any piercings, tattoos, cut, color, or change your hair after casting envelopes have been given without consulting the director.

If you can adhere to the requirements and want to be considered for casting, write your name on the interest list at the front desk in the lobby. Applying for casting consideration does not guarantee you a role.

If you have questions email: milissaackerley@gmail.com. Casting will be announced July 1, 2024.
